Uzundara Fortress in Surkhandarya will become a tourist attraction

Uzundara Fortress, located in the Baysun district of Surkhandarya region, is a unique monument that combines elements of ancient Greek and local architecture.

This fortress, built on the top of a waterless mountain, in ancient times played a strategically important role as a defensive facility on the border between Bactria and Soghd. The defense system also included the Darband and other defensive walls that ensured border security.

Uzundara Fortress functioned as an administrative and military center. Its walls are decorated with reliefs and heraldic images. It was here that the border troops protecting the territories operated.

During archaeological excavations in the fortress, a unique silver drachma was found with the image of Alexander the Great in a helmet in the form of a lion's head. In addition, coins dating back to the era of Antiochus I have been discovered, which sheds light on the financial and political life of that time.

Outside the fortress, archaeologists found stone slabs covered with alabaster mortar, as well as baths and bathing bowls. These finds provide valuable information about the life and culture of the fortress garrison. Archaeological research continues with the joint work of the Academies of Sciences of Uzbekistan and Russia.

The Islamic Civilization Center of Uzbekistan has developed a project for the reconstruction of an archaeological monument. According to the project, Uzundara Fortress will be restored and transformed into a tourist attraction.
